Adverts VS Editorial

What is the difference between and editorial photo and an advertising photo? An advert sells an individual item, eg a shade of lipstick, or a top, or an item of jewellery, whereas an editorial photos sell more of a look or a feeling or a moment. In adverts there tends to be cleaner lines, and are brighter and lighter, editorial however can be quite dark and edgy which is more usual than an advert. Adverts usually have to follow a house design which makes their adverts more recognisable, for example, Clinique’s adverts are usually very bight and light and feature a scientific theme or some sort, whereas Tom Ford is a lot more sexy and dark which makes their adverts just as recognisable as a Clinique ad.
In an editorial ad there tend to be less ‘rules’ which makes the scape for creativeness a lot wider than and advertisement, however an advertisement needs to stand out to be memorable.

Some adverts break conventions and have an edgier look for example some of the more expensive brands such as Prada or Gucci, however these brands have a very specific demographic of people who are willing to spend a lot of money for what an editorial image sells; a look, a feeling and a moment. However some more affordable brands also decide to use more editorial style images such as American Apparel, which makes their adverts very distinguishable.
